How to Prepare for an Airbrush Tan

So, you’re headed into your local tanning salon for your first airbrush tan and you must have so many questions.

Airbrush tanning is a wonderful way to ensure that you get a beautiful summer glow year round. You get all of the benefits of laying out in the sun without the risk of UV damage to your skin. What more could you want?! But, if this is a part of your regular beauty routine, you know that it can be costly to maintain perfectly bronzed skin on a regular basis.

In order to get great results and ensure that your hard earned money is well spent, there are a few crucial things you need to do prior to stepping into the tanning salon.

We’ve put together a step-by-step guide to follow so you can keep that beautiful glow year round while getting the most out of each and every airbrush tanning session!

The Preparation Process

The first step of airbrush tanning takes place way before you step foot into the tanning salon. In order to get optimal results, you have to make sure that your skin is prepared to properly absorb the tanning solution.

The best way to accomplish this is to shave and exfoliate. We recommend using a washcloth and our Air-Tan Exfoliating Scrub . The formula consists of glycolic acid which actually removes dead skin cells on contact.

After you’re finished exfoliating and your skin is perfectly smooth, do not use moisturizer! Lotion acts as a barrier between your skin and the solution. Please make sure that your body is free of any lotions, gels, oils, perfumes, etc. We don’t want any barriers between the Air-Tan solution and your skin.

Casual is Key

One of the most commonly asked questions when it comes to airbrush tanning is, “What do I wear?”

Walking into the tanning salon, we always suggest that you wear something comfy and loose fitting. There is a chance that some of the tanning solution may rub off on your clothing, so darker shades such as black or dark blue are always recommended.

During your spray tan, we do require both men and women to wear bottoms. These can include underwear, swimsuit bottoms or boxers. What you wear during your tan is completely based on personal preference.

We do offer complimentary disposable thongs (with or without lines)  in our salon to wear during your airbrush tan so you don’t have to stress about removing any tanning solution from your clothing.

Walking out of the Tanning Salon

After you’ve followed our step-by-step prep guide and your tan is looking absolutely flawless, we know you may be tempted to go and show it off to the entire world. But, (yes there is a but) in order to make sure all of your preparation work doesn’t go to waste, you should avoid any activities involving water and excess sweat for the next 8 hours.

This means getting a mani-pedi with your girlfriends should be put on hold for another day following your airbrush session. Ideally this is something that should be done prior to your tan as soaking in the water will help to exfoliate the tan off.

You should also avoid things like working out or taking your dog for a jog until your gorgeous tan is fully dried on your skin.

We suggest using the rest of your day for some R&R. Kick back, catch up on your favorite binge worthy shows and rest assured that your new tan will be flawless and bronzed to perfection by the time you wake up!

The Takeaway

We hope that you’ve found our step-by-step guide helpful and informative when it comes to getting that perfectly bronzed glow.

Exfoliating, shaving and wearing the proper clothing into the tanning salon are all incredibly crucial steps to making sure that your airbrush tan is absolutely flawless.

Although there may be a few extra steps to the process than you may have expected, we promise that taking the extra time to prepare your skin properly will make a world of difference in your tan.
