  2. Death by Tanning Bed at Age 26

    by Katelyn Fry

Okay, this article from Cosmopolitan is about a year old, but someone just shared it with me, and I couldn’t help but share it will all of you. It is a true wake up call that a tanning bed is not worth your life. I am interested to see what changes the FDA makes within the tanning industry over the next few years. I never realized how many people really do have skin cancer scares – I see them with my own two eyes every single day at Air-Tan. In fact, in the midst of writing this blog post, I just sprayed a client. She had two bandaids on her. One on her back and one on her stomach. She told me they were melanoma that she just had removed yesterday.

To read the article about 26- year old Glenna Kohl, follow this link. She used a tanning bed about once a week since she was a teenager, detected a lump at the age of 22, battled for the next 4 years, and at 26- she died from melanoma. Reading this really hit home with me because I started using a tanning bed 1-3 times a week when I was 14. I didn’t stop until the day I started my job at Air-Tan. I’m happy to say I have been tanning UV free for 2 years now, however, after reading this, I’ve already made an appointment with a dermatologst to get checked. Using a tanning bed even one time before the age of 30 increases your chances of melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) by 75%.

75%!!!!! That is not a risk I am willing to take…ever again!!! I think I will stick with my Air-Tan…forever and ever. :)

The organization has been working for the last few months on ideas and creations for the miles of banner fabric. They have clutches, purses, beach bags, and even shower curtains. Not only do they have Super Bowl fabric items, but they also still have RCA Dome fabric items for sale.

  4. When NOT to Get an Air-Tan for Your Formal Event

May 10, 2012 by Katelyn Fry

Spray tans can be a little tricky if you aren’t familiar with how they work. I work every Saturday at our salon and often times, I will have newbies call in the mid-afternoon to book a spray tan for a wedding they are in that night. I know some people like the way the spray tan looks when it is first applied, but I would never suggest to a first-time client, to be spray tanned then go to a formal event immediately after – unless you have at least 8 hours for the solution to set + time to shower & get ready + time to drive to your event.

Why? The solution has instant bronzers in it. The only purpose of these bronzers is to show you what your spray tan will end up looking after you take your first shower. They also help me see what I am doing when I am spraying it on. In about three to six hours, when the tanning agent (what gives you your longlasting tan) starts activating, you will start to look REALLY dark. At this time, you will look twice as tan as you are actually supposed to look. This is why I avoid doing much after my spray tan – I really prefer to just go home and go to bed. Once you shower, the bronzers wash off and your tan lightens up to look natural and matte.

Another reason I don’t like to go to a formal event immediately after my spray tan is because we have lots of aloes and moisturizers in our solution. Spray tans naturally dry your skin out and these moisturizers help protect your skin from that. For this reason, not only are you extra dark until you shower, but you are extra sticky and shiny, too. The bronzers and aloes can rub off on your clothes, so if you are wearing a light-colored formal dress, the likelihood of you muddling it with bronzers is very high. Also, if you are going to be doing any dancing or have any chance of sweating – two things will happen. First, the bronzer will run (see picture) as you sweat and your tan will not take to your skin as well. It needs a full 8 hours to set before getting wet at all, even lightly sweating. For these reasons, I highly suggest Air-Tanning in enough time to fit in a shower before any formal event you plan to go to – ideally, I would come the day before any formal event.

Also, if it is your first time or it has been a long while since you’ve visited us, I highly suggest trying it out a week or two before your event. This way, you can see exactly what shade you like the best and what day you like your tan best. This will help you in scheduling your appointment and choosing your color level.

Emily featured this picture on one of her recent blogs and this is a PERFECT example of what I am talking about…Even Christina Aguilera could use some spray tanning tips. Pardon the crude “Bridesmaids” reference, but if the “steam-heat from your undercarriage” is so powerful that it may result in sweating off your tan, please get sprayed the day before. If she would have just planned a little better, got her spray tan earlier, then took a shower, the bronzers would have washed away and this unfortunate mishap would have never occured!

Disclaimer: Every Air-Tanner has their own preferences so the way you tan is totally up to you, but this is just my professional opinion when it comes to Air-Tans and formal events. :)

  5. Not Your Classic Mani

May 9, 2012 by Emily Ross

I am a huge fan of cool and funky nail designs.  Since I have to wear black all day, everyday at work, nail art is a fun way to express my personal style.  I will admit, I do not have the patience or the steady hand to execute anything very detailed or exciting on myself, so that’s why I visit my friends at Top Nails on 53rd and Keystone. :)

But if you are good at do-it-yourself-ing, one of our part-timers, Courtney, filled me in on this AWESOME blog called Chloe’s Nails, that has tons and tons of ideas and tutorials for chic and funky at-home manicures.

Here are some pics of some of my favorites:

    Matte/shiny french mani--LOVE!

    The "Water Marbled" effect

This method is called "Konading," and it's basically like a stamp pad for your nails!

Do you know of any other cool nail blogs I should check out?

  6. Road Trips, Bachelorette Parties, & Air-Tan!

May 3, 2012 by Katelyn Fry

At the age of 27, I’m amidst yet another summer full of bachelorette parties, bridal showers, and weddings. Of course, you want to do something special for your bachelorette party, but how do you choose? With so many options in our own city and so many cool nearby cities, there’s lots to to choose from!

Louisville, Kentucky – Just a short drive away – about 2 hours, Louisville is one of my favorite party spots. Fourth Street is located in the middle of downtown and is a covered, heated plaza with bars, restaurants, and shops. You can usually pay one cover for several bars and you can do something you cannot do here in Indy – walk from bar to bar without throwing your drink away! Ahh, it’s the little things in life. :) Maker’s Mark is a wonderful dinner option and Lynn’s Paradise Cafe is a must for a day-after brunch. The food is absolutely delicious and the atmosphere is bright, vintage, and very Allison-in-Wonderland-like.

Chicago, Illinois – Another short drive away – about 3 hours and what an amazing city. I went here last summer for an awesome bachelorette party. We stayed at the Sax Hotel in the Thompson Suite. The Sax is adjacent to the House of Blues and walking distance to Michigan Avenue. The Thompson suite is HUGE and on the 15th floor. Lil’ Wayne stayed in it the weekend before us! It has one bedroom with king bed, 2 bathrooms, living room with several pull-out couches, kitchen, and a grand entryway. We packed about 20 girls in the room (brought some air-mattresses, but did not even end up blowing them up!), but all had plenty of room. We went for a day bar crawl around the city, had our own in-suite party that night, and then went to the Kit Kat Lounge in Wrigleyville for brunch before we left town. The food was top notch, the mimosas were all-you-can-drink, and there was even a mid-morning drag queen show! Only in Chicago. :)

Indianapolis, DUH! Treat yourself to a room at the Conrad or the JW Marriott and indulge in all that downtown Indy has to offer. With so many dinner choices – Capital Grille, Mesh, Harry and Izzy’s, Barcelona Tapas…just to name a few – and so much nightlife – Six, Bartini’s, Subterra, Hue, Nicky Blaine’s, Howl at the Moon- you are sure to have a great night. Or try my favorite place for dinner and partying – Sensu. All of their food is DELICIOUS. My favorites are the Kobe beef, lobster tacos, any of their sushi, and their macadamia nut cookie dessert (freshly baked, but still a little cookie dough-y on a hot skillet with ice cream). Then, just hop on downstairs and dance the night away!

Of course, you will need a healthy glow for your party, so don’t forget to come see us at Air-Tan! We have a Buy 4, Get 1 Free package that can be shared with your friends. It drops the price of a tan from $30 to just $24. We also do mobile at-home parties.
    Happy Party Planning!
